Question

Has music been considered "Haraam" in Islam? If it has been, then is listening to it a minor sin or is it among the "Kabeera" sins?

Answer

Music is expressly prohibited in many ahādith.

For example, Imam Bukhārī narrates in his Sahīh that Rasūlullāh (sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) said:

“There will certainly be from my ummah, groups [of people] who will regard illicit sexual intercourse, silk, wine and musical instruments [ma‘āzif] as halāl....” [i]

See Ask Imam #28271 for a detailed article on the prohibition of listening to music.
