Question

I have a sister-in-law who wants to marry a hindu. Her other family is also supporting her and wants my husband to support her financially for this. My husband is the youngest of the siblings so no one is listening to him and boht of us live away from home due to his job. Both their parents are no more now, so no one to guide them. I know that this is haram and want to stop her, I explained to her but she still want to go ahead with her decision.

She has always fought with me and will never understand that i am telling this for her and her parents' good. She says she feels alone and she will follow Islam even after marriage. My husband won't participate in the occassion but may send her some money under pressure from elder sisters.

Please explain the consequences of this as I want to explain to my husband and his sisters. Please advice as to what I and my husband should do. If this is permissible?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Sister in Islām,

It is Harām for a Muslim woman to marry a Hindu. Such a marriage will be invalid and regarded as Zinā, which incurs the wrath and anger of Allah. Allah says in the Qurān,

Help one another in righteousness and piety, but do not help one another in sin and rancour: fear Allah: for Allah is strict in punishment

It is not permissible for you or anyone else to financially assist your sister in law in getting married to a Hindu.

You refer to your husband being pressurized by his elder sisters. Remember, a Muslim must abide by the dictates of Sharī’ah irrespective of the opposition he faces. Rasūlullah (Sallallāhu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam)

There is no obedience for the creation when it results in the disobedience of Allah[1]
