Avoiding shifts
Question
I work in hospital. For a particular shift, the hospital has hired 2 doctors. If these 2 doctors agree between themselves that they will each work 2 shifts out of 4. So that they will have to work extra hard for the 2 shifts that they are working. But will not turn have to turn up for the remaining 2 shifts. And if the management is not aware of this, will this be allowed and halal?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
If it is specified in your employment contract that you will have to work for four shifts, it will not be permissible to mutually agree with your colleague to work by yourself for two shifts, thus relieving your colleague and vice versa without approval from your management.1
