Question

I have a small question. Today I was watching some hadith videos on YouTube and then I saw a video about Malaik-al-Mawt (Angel of Death). It stated that the Angel of Death has never been mentioned by name in any of the hadiths or in the Quran. Then I browsed around on Google and saw some articles that sums all angels up that has been mentioned by name. Djibreel, Mikail, Israfil, Munkar & Nakir, Harut & Marut.

Afterwards I saw another article mentioning the angel Azrael, saying that he's the angel of death. So my question is, dear brother, who is the angel of death? Do we know his name? If no, what's Azrael's main task as an angel?

I hope you can answer my question.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Muhammed Bin Sireen Rahmatullahi Alaihi has advised:

“Certainly this knowledge is Deen, so be wary from who you take your Deen from.”

The information found in google and the internet are not always authentic. You should consult your local Ulama and seek advice on reading authentic Islamic literature.

Malakul Maut literally means ‘The Angel of death’ which is referred to in the following verse of the Quraan Kareem;

"Say, The angel of death will take you who has been entrusted with you. Then to your Lord you will be returned."
(Surah Sajda 32: Verse 11)

According to one view, Malakul Maut refers to the head of a group of Angels who are responsible to extract the souls of dying people.

According to some weak narrations, the name of Malakul Maut is Izraeel.iiiiiiivvvi

Our focus should be more on preparing for death in the state of Imaan, rather than knowing the exact name of Malakul Maut.
