Is it permissible to keep a middle name in order to continue family tradition?
Question
Is it permissible to give a middle names such as Davis, in order to continue family tradition
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
It is permissible to keep middle names. Accordingly, it is permissible to keep the name Davis as a family tradition. However, it would be best to keep a Muslim name. It is stated in the following hadith,
Translation: Surely you will be called on the Day of Judgment according to your names and your fathers’ names. Therefore beautify your names. (Sunan Abu Dawoud, #4948)
It is understood from the above quoted hadith that we are encouraged to give good and meaningful names to our children. It is mustahab (encouraged) for one to keep names of the Prophets, the names of the companions, and the pious predecessors.[ii]
