Question

Is the following quotation correct?

“Oh son of Aadam, seek me and find me. If you find me you found everything. If you have not found me you have found nothing. And I am better than all else.”

Can we quote it?

Answer

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The tradition in question is as follows:

Translation: Allah ﷻ says “Oh son of Aadam, search for me and you shall most certainly find me. If you find me you have found everything, and if you lose me you have lost everything. And I, Allah, am better than all else”.

Allahmah Ibn Taymiyyah and Hafiz Ibn Kathir (Rahimahumullah) have both quoted the abovementioned Hadith Qudsi and sourced it from historical traditions (اسرائيليات). Shaykh Shihabud Din, Abul Fath Al Abshihi (Rahimahullah) has quoted this as part of a longer narration and mentioned, “It has been reported that Ka’b Al Ahbar had found these words in the Tawrah”. [1]

Therefore, the above mentioned narration is suitable for quoting, but not as a Hadith of Rasulullah ﷺ.
