Saying R.I.P for people who have passed away - Is this permissible?
Question
Is it fine to say RIP for non muslims who have passed away
And what about for muslims? will it be fine to say RIP
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
The phrase “rest in peace” (R.I.P) is essentially a Dua for the deceased. It is not permissible to make Dua for a person who has died on Kufr.
Therefore, it will not be permissible to say “rest in peace” for a non-Muslim who has passed away.
Since the phrase is commonly used for non-Muslims, it is therefore advisable that one does not use such a phrase for Muslims who have passed away. Rather, one should use Duas such as "رحمه الله" (may Allah Ta’ala have mercy on him) etc.[1]

السابعة : لما قال تعالى : {وَلا تُصَلِّ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ مَاتَ أَبَداً} قال علماؤنا : هذا نص في الامتناع من الصلاة على الكفار ، وليس فيه دليل على الصلاة على المؤمنين. واختلف هل يؤخذ من مفهومه وجوب الصلاة على المؤمنين على قولين. يؤخذ لأنه علل المنع من الصلاة على الكفار لكفرهم لقوله تعالى : {إِنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ} فإذا زال الكفر وجبت الصلاة.
مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِىِّ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَن يَسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَلَوْ كَانُوٓا۟ أُو۟لِى قُرْبَىٰ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمْ أَنَّهُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْجَحِيمِ (التوبة: ١١٣)

ويحرم سؤال العافية مدى الدهر أو خير الدارين ودفع شرهما أو المستحيلات العادية كنزول المائدة قيل والشرعية والحق حرمة الدعاء بالمغفرة للكافر لا لكل المؤمنين كل ذنوبهم
