Laser Hair Removal
Question
I would like to find out about the ruling of laser hair removal is it permissible or not because they claim it to be permanent hair removal?
Answer
Fundamentally, it would be permissible to remove unwanted hair with a permanent hair removal method such as the laser system, as the main objective is cleanliness taking into consideration that:
– It does not cause any harm to the body (according to some reports, the laser method burns hair follicles from the root, which could result in causing harm to the skin. If this is true, then one should abstain).
– It is done on those parts of the body which are regarded permissible to expose to others (i.e. facial hair etc. and for a male in front of a male and for a female in front of a female). If this method is used for the hair between the navel and the knees (which is regarded to be the Awrah/Satr), then it will only be permissible for the husband and wife to carry out the treatment on each other. Unnecessarily exposing one’s Awrah/Satr is impermissible. It is only permissible due to necessity, and removal of hair with the laser method is not a valid excuse because one can suffice on other conventional methods of hair removal that one can carry out one his own, e.g. shaving, plucking or waxing.
However, it is preferable to pluck the hair under the armpits for both, men and women, and with regards to the pubic hair, it is preferable for a woman to pluck and for a man to shave.4 If one is not able to pluck, it will be permissible for him/her to shave. By adopting these methods, one will also be fortunate to practise on the Sunnah of Rasulullaah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam. i.e. removing of unwanted hair every week. By resorting to the laser-removal method, one will be deprived of this regular weekly Sunnah, which entails that it would be preferable not to adopt the laser method.

ثم ذكر في الإبط النتف في الأصل، وهو إشارة إلى أن السنة فيه النتف وهو كذلك، وذكر في الجامع الصغير الحلق وهو إشارة إلى أنه ليس بحرام.

و ذكر في الإبطين الحلق هنا وفي الأصل النتف وهو السنة، وفي النهاية، وأما العانة فالسنة فيها الحلق لما جاء في الحديث عشر من السنة منها الاستحداد وتفسيره حلق العانة بالحديد.

(و) يستحب حلق عانته وتنظيف بدنه بالاغتسال في كل أسبوع مرة والأفضل يوم الجمعة وجاز في كل خمسة عشرة وكره تركه وراء الأربعين مجتبى (قوله ويستحب حلق عانته قال في الهندية ويبتدئ من تحت السرة ولو عالج بالنورة يجوز كذا في الغرائب وفي الأشباه والسنة في عانة المرأة النتف (قوله وتنظيف بدنه بنحو إزالة الشعر من إبطيه ويجوز فيه الحلق والنتف أولى. وفي المجتبى عن بعضهم وكلاهما حسن
