Trimming The Hair To Come Out Of Ihraam
Question
I have learnt that after performing umrah the hair on the head does not have to be shaved completely but can be trimmed in order to come out of ihraam. how should the hair be trimmed with regards to zulfa? should the hair be trimmed all around the head or should it be trimmed at the back of the head should the hair be at approx. shoulder length?
Answer
After performance of Umrah, the Muhrim (one in the state of Ihram) has been afforded two options in regards to cutting the hair. He may either remove the hair totally by having it shaven off which is obviously the better option and referred to as Halq. The second option is to trim the hair after performance of Umrah which is referred to as Qasr.
The Fuqaha have written that the minimum requirement of Qasr is that hair equivalent to the length of the first joint of the forefinger must be trimmed from at least a quarter of the head in order to come out of Ihraam. However, doing so from only a quarter of the head is Makrooh-e-Tahrimi (highly abominable and detestable), even though a person will be released from his Ihraam. To avoid perpetration of such a Makrooh-e-Tahrimi act, it will be Waajib and essential that one trims hair equivalent to the length of the first joint of the finger from the entire head and not from just a quarter the head.
From the above explanation, we can conclude that a person with Zulfa will also be required to trim hair equivalent to the length of the first joint of his finger from all around the head.
