Illness Which Warrants Salaah Being Performed Seated
Question
How does one determine that an illness is serious enough to warrant sitting on the floor or on a chair to perform Salah?
Answer
A person will only be allowed to sit and perform his Fardh Salaah if his condition is of such a nature that he is harmed by standing. That means that
a. He falls down immediately upon attempting to stand.
b. There is a genuine fear of his illness increasing that can be ascertained either by a past experience or by being informed by a reliable and expert Muslim doctor.
c. His recovery being delayed due to his standing.
d. If he experiences unbearable pain by standing.
e. Or if by standing, his urine flows continuously.
If he can take support by leaning on a stick or by another person helping him, then he will have to stand. If he is able to stand for a few moments, then he will be required to stand for that amount of time, after which he may sit. Even in this condition, he will not be allowed to sit on a chair and perform his Salaah by signs if he is able to sit on the floor and perform his Sajdah by placing his head on the ground.
