Cleaning Vomit On A Carpet
Question
A Musalli vomited a mouthful during Salaah which messed quite a number of Mussallahs. He then ran out messing more of the Masjid. The Imaam told the cleaner to vacuum the stained areas not to wash it.
Is this correct?
Answer
a) The Masjid Musallah (carpet) does not become pure merely by vacuuming it after it has been messed with vomit. Since vomit contains both liquids as well as solids. When vacuuming the Musallah (carpet) the solids are removed but the liquid that would seep into the carpet would require it to be washed to become pure.
b) The carpet will still have to be washed in one of the following ways:
If the stain of the vomit is still visible then that area should be washed until the effects of the vomit has been removed.
If there is no visible stain and the carpet is easily removable then the carpet should be
removed and washed thrice squeezing it thoroughly until no water drips between each wash. If the carpet cannot be squeezed then it should be left to dry until the dripping of
the water stops.
If the carpet cannot easily be removed as in many of our Masaajid which have fitted carpets then the messed area of the carpet should be washed thrice and left to dry after every wash. Alternatively, a vacuum or cloth can be used to speed up the drying process
between each wash.
The carpet can also be washed by throwing water over it. In this condition a person
should work out how much of water is needed to soak the carpet and three times that amount should be thrown over the carpet. if this is done then to wash thrice will not be a condition, nor will squeezing be necessary.
