Gift Cards

Question

I had a question regarding the purchase of gift cards. There is a specific scenario which I am wondering if it is Halal to purchase or not.

Various companies sell gift cards for other stores – such as a R50 gift card to an Electronics store, or R100 gift card to another branded store. The company selling the gift card is generally different from the store the gift card can work at.

Sometimes these companies offer discounts on the gift card such as a 10% off. So what ends up happening is that you can purchase a R50 gift card for R45.

I want to understand the validity and if is halal to purchase such a gift card. Because the gift card does hold a ‘monetary value’ but is being sold for less than the actual amount, however it is limited to one store. I am aware of not being able to make similar transactions for money to money, as that would be similar to interest etc. But wanted to understand where it sits for gift cards.

Answer

If the gift card is sold by you to a third party, it will not be permissible to sell it for other than its face value.

If however, the issuer of the gift card sells it to you for other than its value (as in the enquired case where the issuer sells it to you for R45 instead of for R50), or the second party (you, for example) sells it back to the issuer for other than its value, it will be permissible to buy/sell it in this manner.
