When To Make The Niyyat Of A Fast
Question
When is it necessary to make niyyah for all the following fasts:
In Ramadhaan
Qadha of Ramadhaan
A specific vow, e.g. 16 September
A general vow
Nafl
Kafaraah
Answer
According to the Hanafi Mazhab it will be necessary to have the intention of fasting prior to or at Subh Sadiq (the time sehri ends) for Qadha of Ramadhaan, a general vow and Kafarah. Whilst for Ramadhaan, a specific vow and Nafl one has the option up to the time just prior to Dahwatul-kubra. (That time which is the midpoint between Subh Sadiq and sunset. This is different to Zawaal as Zawaal is the midpoint between sunrise and sunset.)
