Question

I have a question regarding the correct Rukhsati method in Islam. Is it a islamic necessity to have the Quraan Sharif held over the head when the bride is departing with the groom, or is this just a cultural addition?

Answer

To place a Quran Shareef over the head when the bride and groom are leaving is not a necessary criterion for the validity and completion of the marriage. It is indeed a cultural addition which is incorrect and an innovation.

One should refrain from this practice. For the validity of the marriage according to Islamic Law, the respective parties, or their representatives, must simply offer/propose and accept in the presence of a minimum of two male witnesses or one male and two female witnesses. This is all that is needed to render the marriage valid and complete.
