Surrogacy
Question
Is surrogacy permissible?
Answer
Surrogacy is the process of giving birth as a surrogate mother or of arranging such a birth. A surrogate mother is a woman who bears a child on behalf of another woman, either from her own egg fertilized by the other woman’s partner, or from the implantation in her uterus of a fertilized egg from the other woman.
In terms of Shari’ah, surrogacy is impermissible. Ulama have mentioned that a woman who is impregnated by means of artificial insemination (with the sperm of a strange man other than her husband) is considered as an adulterous woman; in fact, her action is considered to be worse than that of adultery.
