Question

Does a microphone system and its sensitivity affect a Sirri Salaah? e.g. In Zuhr or Asr Salaah the Imaam is reciting and you are able to hear him reciting one lengthy Aayat or three short Aayaat because of the microphone. Would this invalidate the Salaah or make Sajdah Sahw Waajib at the end, or is it completely fine?

Answer

In principle, with regard to the Imaam’s Qiraa’ah, it is his natural voice that is taken into consideration. Hence, if the Imaam’s recitation is such that, without the microphone, it would be inaudible, then Sajdah Sahw will not be necessary.

Note: Our esteemed Ulama advise that a microphone should be employed only when there is a genuine need. If the Imaam’s voice can naturally reach the congregation, it is preferable to refrain from using amplification.

Furthermore, when a microphone is used to ensure that the Muqtadis can hear their Imaam, the volume should be set only to the extent required, and not beyond it. Moreover, during a silent Salaah, should the microphone be utilised, its volume ought to remain minimal so that the Imaam’s voice does not carry to the Muqtadis.
