Question

If a person sins in secret, does he still have to enjoin good and forbid evil even if he himself does evil?

Answer

If someone has sinned in secret, this should not prevent him from enjoining good and forbidding evil. We learn from our pious predecessors that when one forbids others from evil while he himself is engaged in that sin, this will actually aid him in staying away from that sin the next time he wishes to commit it. It comes in a Hadīth:

Anas I reports, “We (the Ṣaḥābah M) asked, ‘Oh Rasūl of Allāh (H)! Should we only enjoin good when we practice upon it and should we only forbid evil when we stay away from it completely?’ Rasūlullāh H replied, ‘Enjoin good even if you are unable to practice upon it and forbid evil even if you are unable to stay away from it completely.’”

The above Ḥadīth is clear in this respect. Just the way refraining from sins and carrying out good deeds is an obligation, enjoining good and forbidding evil too is an obligation. Therefore, if one is unable to carry out one of the obligations, the other will still remain in its place.

However, this does not give one the license to not practise what he preaches; rather, he should always endeavour to make his actions conform to what he says. He should feel ashamed to engage in that which he forbids others from.

In conclusion, one’s own sins should not deter him from advising others and at the same time he should not be so shameless that he brazenly commands others to do good and refrain from evil but does not do so himself.
