Zakat On Pure Silver Thread
Question
A picture of a frame made from pure silver thread like the Ghilaaf of the Kaba got pure gold thread. This frame is kept for sentimental value and decoration.
Will Zakaat be liable on these kind of frames and if so how will it be calculated? Are there any other conditions of Zakaat applicable?
Answer
There will be Zakat on it. You may take this frame to an expert dealer of silver to get an estimation of the weight of the silver and its value. Thereafter, you will add this value to your total yearly Zakatable assets calculation and pay 2.5% from that total calculation as Zakat.
However, if you only own that frame with the silver threads and the silver’s weight does not reach the Nisab of silver (612.36 grams), there would be no Zakat payable on it.
