Question

Is it acceptable for a Hanafi to change his Madhab and adopt another Madhab?

Answer

It is not permissible for a normal person (that is not a Mujtahid) to move over from one Madhab to another, as this is considered as following one’s wishes and desires. There is great Fasaad in doing so. Yes, if a Mujtahid was following a particular Imaam of Fiqh due to having reliance on him, but due to his vast knowledge and foresight he no longer has reliance on that particular Imaam, then such a Mujtahid is permitted to fully move over to another Madhab. Ask Ibn Masood

Fatawa SA is an independent, read-only index of fatawa already published by Darul Ifta Ibn Masood. It is not a fatwa service. For your own situation, ask the issuing Darul Ifta directly.
