Question

I would like to know if it is permissible to consume activated charcoal, or is it discouraged as it is the food of the Jinn?

Answer

We understand that activated charcoal is used as medication or as a treatment for overdosing of drugs or poisoning. The drugs or toxins bind to the charcoal and is consequently removed from the body. It is also beneficial for treatment of the kidneys, lowering cholesterol levels, diarrhea, skin infections etc. In conclusion, if it is used for treatment and, according to the medical experts, there is no harm in doing so, then it may be utilized.

Ask Ibn Masood

Fatawa SA is an independent, read-only index of fatawa already published by Darul Ifta Ibn Masood. It is not a fatwa service. For your own situation, ask the issuing Darul Ifta directly.
