Adopting a cat as a pet
Question
Is it a Sunnah to keep cats as pets? What are the rules with regard to keeping cats as pets?
Answer
It is recorded in the commentary of Bukhari Sharif that it is permissible to adopt a cat as a pet, as long as its provisions are taken care of. It is Waajib upon the owner to feed the animal and spend on its needs. Tuhfatul Ahwazi states that it is Mustahab to adopt a cat as a pet and take care of it.

حدَّثنا نَصْرُ بنُ عَلِيٍّ قالَ أخْبرَنا عَبْدُ الأعْلى قالَ حدَّثَنا عُبَيْدُ الله بنُ عُمَرَ عنْ نافِعٍ عنِ ابنِ عُمرَ رَضِي الله تَعَالَى عنهُما عنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسلم قالَ دَخَلَتِ امْرَأةٌ النَّارَ فِي هِرَّةٍ رَبَطَتْهَا فلَمْ تُطْعِمْها ولَمْ تَدَعْهَا تأكُلُ مِنْ خَشاشِ الأرْضِ
وَفِيه: جَوَاز اتِّخَاذ الْهِرَّة ورباطها إِذا لم يهمل إطعامها وسقيها، وَيلْحق بهَا غَيرهَا مِمَّا فِي مَعْنَاهَا، وَإِنَّمَا يجب إطعامها على من حَبسهَا، قَالَه الْقُرْطُبِيّ. قَالَ النَّوَوِيّ: وَفِيه: وجوب نَفَقَة الْحَيَوَان على مَالِكه (عمدة القاري شرح صحيح البخاري ص198 ج15)
قَالَ الْعُلَمَاءُ يُسْتَحَبُّ اتِّخَاذُ الْهِرَّةِ وَتَرْبِيَتُهَا أَخْذًا مِنَ الْأَحَادِيثِ وَأَمَّا حَدِيثُ حُبُّ الْهِرَّةِ مِنَ الْإِيمَانِ فَمَوْضُوعٌ على ما قاله جماعة كالصغاني ذكره القارىء (تحفة الاحوذي ص263 ج1)
