Selling Dogs and Cats
Question
Is it permissible to keep dogs to breed puppies, and is it permissible to sell puppies?
If one’s cat has had kittens, would it be permissible to sell them.
Answer
1. It is not permissible to keep dogs as pets, as it prevents the angels from entering the house. However, if one keeps dogs for hunting, or for protection purposes, then it will be permissible to do so. If the security or hunting dogs give birth to puppies, then there is no harm in selling them.
2. It is permissible to sell cats and kittens.

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ: وَاعَدَ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ فِي سَاعَةٍ يَأْتِيهِ فِيهَا، فَجَاءَتْ تِلْكَ السَّاعَةُ وَلَمْ يَأْتِهِ، وَفِي يَدِهِ عَصًا، فَأَلْقَاهَا مِنْ يَدِهِ، وَقَالَ: مَا يُخْلِفُ اللهُ وَعْدَهُ وَلَا رُسُلُهُ، ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ، فَإِذَا جِرْوُ كَلْبٍ تَحْتَ سَرِيرِهِ، فَقَالَ: يَا عَائِشَةُ، مَتَى دَخَلَ هَذَا الْكَلْبُ هَاهُنَا؟ فَقَالَتْ: وَاللهِ، مَا دَرَيْتُ، فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَأُخْرِجَ، فَجَاءَ جِبْرِيلُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: وَاعَدْتَنِي فَجَلَسْتُ لَكَ فَلَمْ تَأْتِ، فَقَالَ: مَنَعَنِي الْكَلْبُ الَّذِي كَانَ فِي بَيْتِكَ، إِنَّا لَا نَدْخُلُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ كَلْبٌ وَلَا صُورَةٌ (صحيح مسلم 2104)
