Question

I would like to know if Sorbitol is Halaal?

Answer

Sorbitol, less commonly known as glucitol, is a sugar alcohol with a sweet taste which the human body metabolizes slowly. It can be obtained by reduction of glucose, which changes the converted aldehyde group to a primary alcohol group.

Sugar alcohols are a type of carbohydrate called ‘polyols.’ Part of their chemical structure resembles sugar and part resembles alcohol.

Sorbitol occurs naturally in a variety of berries and fruits such as apple, berries, prunes etc. There is no harm in consuming sorbitol when found naturally in fruit as the Quraan Sharif states, “Worship your Rabb……Who has sent water for you from the sky, using it to bring forth fruits for your sustenance.” [Surah Baqarah Verse 22, Surah 2] However, when obtained via fermentation using microscopic yeasts, bacteria and molds (and thereby converting sugar to alcohol) then it will not be permitted according to Muhammad Rahimahullah which is the juristic view in the Madhab. Caution therefore dictates that alternatives (free of sorbitol alcohol) are used.
