Zakaah on gold-plated jewellery
Question
Is it necessary/Waajib to pay Zakaah on gold-plated rings/jewellery etc. ?
Answer
Gold plated jewellery is not pure gold rather it is metal jewellery that has been plated with a thin layer of gold. Since the metal content is far more than the gold plating the ring will be categorized as a metal ring, hence exempted from Zakaat.

(وإذا كان الغالب على الدراهم) المغشوشة (الفضة فهي) كلها (فضة) حكما (و) كذا (إذا كان الغالب على الدنانير) المغشوشة (الذهب فهي) كلها (ذهب) حكما (و) كذا (يعتبر فيهما من تحريم التفاضل ما يعتبر في الجياد) ، لأن النقود لا تخلو عن قليل غش خلقه أو عادة لأجل الانطباع، فإنها بدونه تتفتت، وحيث كان كذلك اعتبر الغالب، لأن المغلوب في حكم المستهلك (وإن كان الغالب عليهما الغش فليسا في حكم الدراهم والدنانير) اعتباراً للغالب (اللباب في شرح الكتاب ص50 ج2)
