Discussing Valentine’s day with Maktab students
Question
A Madrasah during the month of February discuss Valentines day and the exchanging of gifts with students that are as young as 9 years old. As parents it upsetting for us as our kids don’t have the slightest clue of these pagan cultures and un-Islamic celebrations. Please comment!
Answer
If the Madrasah discusses Valentine’s Day so that the children may be informed of its impermissibility in Shariah, then it is quite in order as children at basic primary school level are being indoctrinated with the worst forms of evil. Our children should therefore be made aware that these are Kuffar customs which we should refrain from. We hope that it is not being promoted at the Madrasah. If it is being promoted at the institute and they are being encouraged to exchange gifts then we should remove our children from the Madrasah and the teachers should be replaced.

Fatawa SA is an independent, read-only index of fatawa already published by Darul Ifta Ibn Masood. It is not a fatwa service. For your own situation, ask the issuing Darul Ifta directly.
