Keeping the six fasts of Shawwal whilst having Qadha fasts outstanding
Question
Should priority be given to the Nafl fasts of Shawwal before repaying my Qadha fast of Ramadaan, or must I first complete the Qadha fasts of Ramadaan before keeping the Nafl fasts of Shawwwal?
Answer
It is recorded in the Kitaabs of Fiqh that keeping a Nafl fast while having outstanding Qadha fasts is fundamentally permitted. However, preference should always be given to Qadha fasts over Nafl fasts as the time of death is unknown, and one will be liable for not keeping one’s Qadha fasts in the court of Allah Ta’ala. Therefore, we advise that you first keep your Qadha fast and then the Shawwal fasts if time permits. However, if one keeps the Shawwal fasts and thereafter keeps the Qadhaa, then too, it will be acceptable.
