Skin to Skin Contact
Question
After giving birth, the newborn baby is placed on the mother for skin to skin contact. There are various benefits in carrying out this action. Would it be Islamically permissible to do so?
Answer
We as Muslims are governed by the laws of Shariah. Hence, if skin to skin contact between mother and newborn will entail anything against Shariah such as one’s Satr being exposed without a genuine need, then it will not be permissible. However, if skin to skin contact between mother and newborn can be carried out without the Satr being exposed, then it will be permissible. The Satr should be concealed by placing a sheet over the parent and child.
