Salaah

Question

May we advise a new Muslim to perform the Fardh of every Salaah, and then when they comprehend Salaah, we explain Sunnah, Nafl, etc. in order for them to perform Salaah? Should they learn all of this immediately, or would it be determined by their degree of comprehension and, in some situations, the level at which we communicate with them (due to language barriers)?

Answer

After embracing Islam, they should be taught how to perform the Fardh Salaah and its requisites immediately. When they are able to perform the Fardh Salaah, they should be taught the total number of Rakaats of every Salaah and encouraged to perform them as well. If they are able to perform the Fardh Salaah, then performing Nawafil wouldn’t be difficult as the procedure is more or less the same.

Ask Ibn Masood

Fatawa SA is an independent, read-only index of fatawa already published by Darul Ifta Ibn Masood. It is not a fatwa service. For your own situation, ask the issuing Darul Ifta directly.
