Question

Please confirm if it Sunnah to announce at a Mayyit if the Marhoom is owing any money, or if anyone has any claims, to contact the family?

Answer

Hadrat Zubair Radiallahu Anhu left behind many debts on his demise. When his son paid the debts, the children of Zubair said, “Distribute our inheritance amongst us.” He said, “I will not distribute until I announce in the season of Hajj for four years, ‘Whoever Zubair is owing money to should come to us and we will settle it,’.” This is proof that there is no harm in making an announcement on the demise of an individual that if the deceased is owing money to anyone then he may come forward and the debt will be settled.
