Question

Q1) Is one’s sister’s grandson a Mahram? Can you travel with him?

Q2) Is there a difference in Mahram, like you don’t have to wear Niqaab for a person, but you can’t travel with him? For example, your mother’s sister’s husband or father’s sister’s husband?

Q3) Is there any difference if the lady is over 50 or 60 years old?

Answer

A1) Firstly, it is imperative to understand the definition of a Mahram. A Mahram in Shariah refers to every such person with whom Nikah is perpetually prohibited either due to blood relationship, foster relationship or marital relationship.

Yes, it is permissible to travel with one’s sister’s grandson if there isn’t any fear of Fitnah. as he qualifies as a Mahram. [Re:- Fataawa Darul Uloom Deoband Pg.232 Vol.7]

A2) It is not necessary to veil oneself from a Mahram and it is permissible to travel with him if there isn’t any fear of Fitnah. In the queried scenario, all the people mentioned do not qualify as Mahaarim hence one is required to cover her face from them, and one is not permitted to travel with them. There is no ruling which states that one is permitted to expose the face but cannot travel with a Ghair-Mahram.

A3) No, due to Fitnah and evil prevalent in our times, it will not be permissible for an elderly woman to travel Safr distance without a Mahram, and she too will have to cover her face from Ghair-Mahram men.
