Fixing the Gaze While Delivering the Khutbah
Question
What is the verdict of the Imaam who, while delivering the Khutbah, looks around towards the right or left?
Answer
It is Sunnah for the Imaam to look straight ahead while delivering the Khutbah. Looking towards the left or right is Makrooh.

ما يفعله بعض الخطباء من تحويل الوجه جهة اليمين وجهة اليسار عند الصلاة على النبي – صلى الله عليه وسلم – في الخطبة الثانية لم أر من ذكره والظاهر أنه بدعة ينبغي تركه لئلا يتوهم أنه سنة.
ثم رأيت في منهاج النووي
قال: ولا يلتفت يمينا وشمالا في شيء منها قال ابن حجر في شرحه لأن ذلك بدعة اهـ ويؤخذ ذلك عندنا من قول البدائع ومن السنة أن يستقبل الناس بوجهه ويستدبر القبلة لأن النبي – صلى الله عليه وسلم – كان يخطب هكذا اهـ (الدر المختار و حاشية ابن عابدين 2/149)
