Question

Is it correct to refer to one’s self as Siddiqi, or Farooqi or Usmani when one is not from those lineages?

Answer

It is not permissible to attribute a lineage to one’s self when one knows that he is not from that lineage. If a person refers to himself as Siddiqi, Farooqi, or Usmani, with the intention of attribution to the lineage, then this is impermissible. However, if a person refers to himself with a title attributed to a place, Madhab, or out of love for someone, then it is permissible to do so. For example, adding Al-Hanafi to one’s name, attributing it to the Madhab of Imam Abu Hanifa Rahmatullahi Alaih.
