Question

Q. What is the Shariah ruling on Taziah where people march in procession in Muharram and mourn the death of Imam Husain (R.A)? Also what Is the Shari’ah position of wearing green and red strings during the days of Muharram. And lastly, I would like to know if the practice of Ratib (where people cut themselves and shed their blood as a means of mourning the death of Sayyiduna Husain R.A).

Answer

All of the abovementioned practices are baseless and unfounded in Islam. The like of offering such condolence and mourning was never found in the lives of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), the Sahabah and Tab’ioon (Radiyallahu Anhum).

The above practices are Bid’ah (innovation) which are condemned in the Shari’ah and should be shunned. Maintaining such ignorant practices only leads towards further misguidance, as the Prophet of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:

“Every Bid’ah is a step towards misguidance” (Nasai)

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has given us clear guidance on how to lead our lives. As Muslims and members of the Ummah of Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), we should remember his unique legacy which will guide us till our last day:

“I have left behind amongst you two legacies, as long as you adhere to it, you will not be led astray, the Book of Allah (Qur’an) and the Sunnah (Hadith) of his Prophet “ (The Muwatta’ of Imam Malik)
