Female Nasheed Groups in front of Male audience

Answer

1. In principle, the voice of a strange woman is not considered ‘awrah.

2. As such, general communication is regarded permissible. However, there are specific instances where it becomes ḥarām to listen to the voice of strange women, such as:

2.1. Listening to her adhān, irrespective of whether there is a risk of temptation (khawf al-fitnah) or not.

2.2. As for her rendition of Qur’ān, al-Shirbīnī holds that it is ḥarām for her to do so in the presence of males, which, by extension, would imply that listening to it would similarly be ḥarām. Al-Ramlī, however, considers it makrūh (disliked).

2.3. As a general rule, our scholars agree that in all instances it is ḥarām to listen to the voice of a strange female when there is sexual arousal or risk of temptation (khawf al-fitnah), even in the context of general communication.

3. As for singing or rendering anāshīd in the presence of strange men, some of our jurists consider it makrūh when there is no risk of temptation (khawf al-fitnah). Others consider it ḥarām irrespective.

4. It is thus discouraged of any male to place himself in a position that would compromise his temptation. Similarly, for a female to be a cause of such potential temptation.

5. As such, it is our strong encouragement that all female nashīd events remain gender exclusive.
