Bordering the Grave with Bricks
Question
My mother-in-law recently passed away. My father-in-law has instructed me to have bricks placed around the grave so the soil stays in one area. Is it permissible to have bricks bordering the grave?
Answer
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Respected brother,
May Allāh Taʿālā fill your mother in laws grave with light and grant her ease and comfort in her grave and every stage thereafter. Amīn.
It is not permissible to border the grave with bricks.
Consider the following narration:
عن جابر قال: “نهى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أن يجصص القبر وأن يقعد عليه وأن يبنى عليه” (صحيح مسلم)
Translation: “Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم has prohibited from hardening the grave, sitting upon it and from building upon it” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 970)
We advise you to address the matter with your father-in-law with love and compassion, taking into consideration the sensitivities of his recent loss.
