Sunnah Method of Applying ‘Itr
Question
What is the Sunnah method of applying itr?
Answer
As salām ʿalaikum wa raḥmatullāhī wa barakātuhū
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Applying ʿItr is a Sunnah practice of Rasūlullāh ﷺ, regardless of how one applies the ʿItr. There is no specific method mentioned in the Qurʾān or Ḥadīth.
One may keep in mind the following occasions and etiquettes of applying ʿItr:
- After performing ablution
- Before the Jumu’ah Ṣalāh
- On the day of ʿĪd
- Before performing Tahajjud Ṣalāh
- When narrating Aḥādīth or acquiring knowledge
- Before entering into the state of Iḥrām
- When returning home to one’s wife
- Prior to intimacy with one’s spouse
- To apply ʿItr on the hair and beard is Sunnah (it is recommended that only pure ʿItr be used on the hair or beard)
