Engagement function
Question
If a couple get engaged, but have not yet performed the nikkah, is it permissible for the woman to wear an engagement ring in public?
Answer
It is permissible to go to the house in order to confirm the proposal. However, having an engagement function for this purpose is an unfounded practice. The Sunnah is that when a match is found, then the nikaah should be performed. Delaying in performing the nikaah is against the Sunnah. To put on the ring at the engagement function is a christian custom and hence should be discarded.
