Which mazhab should one follow?

When I learnt about Islam as far as I remember I was never told about which madhab or Islamic law I should follow, do I need to follow one or it doesn't matter, also how do decide when you have a basic understanding of Islam?
Answer
All our ulama are in agreement that you should follow one, preferably the mazhab that people in your town follow.
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
