MiscellaneousSalaam & GreetingGreeting non-Muslims

Question

Why is it haraam to wish peace (salaam) on a mushrik that isn't fighting with us? How to greet them instead? Doesn't Allah love all and should we treat unbelievers like worst of creatures?

Answer

You may greet with the words:

You are a slave, so remain a slave. Don't assume the role of a master. Allah Ta`ala is not only the master, He is the creator, He is the supreme control, He knows the past and future. Islam does not say that we treat the kaafir like an animal. Rather, the kuffaar who do not show hostility to Islam and Muslims, we show kindness to them.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

Ask Mufti Online

Fatawa SA is an independent, read-only index of fatawa already published by Mufti Online — Madrasah Ta'leemuddeen. It is not a fatwa service. For your own situation, ask the issuing Darul Ifta directly.
