Question

I struggle a lot with vices of the soul, impatience and more especially selfishness. Is there a du'aa I can read daily to be rid of selfishness of the heart?

Answer

The solution for you is to adopt taqwa in your life. Taqwa means to restrain your nafs from committing sins out of the fear of Allah Ta‘ala and out of the fear of His punishment.

Taqwa will be found through you showing determination and courage to leave out sins. Remain in pious company at all times and refrain from joining wrong company, going to wrong places and using devices that will entice you towards committing sins..

Take out some time daily to ponder over the grace of Allah Ta‘ala and His countless favours upon you.

Think to yourself that Allah Ta'ala is your greatest benefactor who is so loving and caring towards you that He continues to shower countless of favours upon you daily. Then ask yourself "is this the way to show gratitude and appreciation to Him" for all His countless favours upon you.

Reprimand yourself for disobeying Allah Ta'ala, (your beloved creator, nourisher and sustainer) by committing such vices and sins in your life.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
