Question

My friend was telling a story of a time when he was defending his sister against another person who was a non Muslim trying to attack her and he beat him up. Is what he did correct?

Answer

If the person was making zulm upon his sister, then it was permissible for him to defend her in whichever way he could.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
