Supplications For The Month of Rajab
Question
(1): Which supplication is Sunnah to recite upon the arrival of the month of Rajab, and what acts should be observed on the first night of Rajab? Please answer in the light of Hadith Shareef.
Answer
Upon the arrival of the blessed month of Rajab, it is Sunnah to recite the following supplication:
O Allah! Bless Us In Rajab And Sha‘baan, And Grant Us Life Until Ramadaan. Hazrat Sayyiduna Anas RadiAllahu Anhu narrates that whenever the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمsighted the moon of Rajab, He صلى الله عليه وسلمwould recite this very supplication. (Mishkaatul-Masaabeeh, Volume 1, Page 292, Raza Academy, Mumbai)
The eminent scholar Allamah Ibn Hajar Haytami Alaihir Rahmah has explicitly classified the recitation of this supplication at the beginning of Rajab as Sunnah. He states: It is Sunnah to recite in Rajab:
(Ithaafu Ahlil-Islam bi-Khusoosiyyaatis-Siyaam, Page 109/ Maktabah Taibah) Explaining this Hadith Shareef, Allamah Mulla Ali Qaari Hanafi Alaihir Rahmah writes:
Translation: Bless us, means, bless our obedience and worship in Rajab and Sha‘baan, and allow us to reach Ramadaan meaning, grant us complete attainment of it and success in fasting and standing in Salaah. (Mirqaatul-Mafaateeh Sharh Mishkaatul-Masaabeeh, Volume 3, Page 418 / Book of Salaah/ Darul Kutbul Ilmiyah Beirut)
In essence, this supplication is a plea for divine blessing in acts of worship during Rajab and Sha‘baan, longevity to reach Ramadaan, and the ability to perform its great acts of devotion, fasting and night Salaah, including Taraaweeh. Likewise, Hakeemul-Ummah Mufti Ahmad Yaar Khan Na‘eemi Alaihir Rahmah beautifully explains: “The Sufis (spiritual personalities) say: Rajab is the month of sowing seeds, Sha‘baan is the month of watering them, and Ramadaan is the month of harvest. Hence, one should exert great effort in voluntary worship during Rajab, weep over sins in Sha‘baan, and in Ramadaan strive to please Allah Almighty and reap the harvest safely. This concept is derived from this very Hadith.” (Mir’atulManaajeeh, Volume 2, Page 321/ Matbooah Islamic Publisher, Matiya Mahal, Delhi)
The First Night of Rajab Special attention should be given to worship and supplication on the first night of Rajab, as it is among the five nights during which supplications are not rejected. An Athar (i.e. a report by a Noble Companion) narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar RadiAllahu Anhuma states: “There are five nights in which supplications are not rejected: the night of Jumu‘ah, the first night of Rajab, the night of mid-Sha‘baan, and the
two nights of the two ‘Eids.” (Musannaf Abdur-Razzaq, Volume 3, Page 321/ Book of Fasting / Shabbeer Brothers Lahore) Conclusion: The arrival of Rajab marks the spiritual prelude to Ramadaan. It is a time for increasing worship, sincere repentance, and heartfelt supplication, especially on its first night seeking Allah’s blessings and the honour of reaching Ramadaan with faith, devotion, and acceptance.
