The Correct Date of The Mi’raaj
Question
(9): Some people say that the 27th of Rajab is not the date of the Night of Mi‘raaj. I therefore request your guidance in this matter: what is the correct date of the Night of Mi‘raaj?
Answer
Although there is some difference of opinion regarding the date of the Night of Mi‘raaj, the strongest and most widely accepted view is that it occurred on the 27th of Rajab. In this regard, the statements of several scholars and hadith masters are presented below: (1) Imam Abi Muhammad Abdullah bin As‘ad bin Ali bin Sulaimaan Yaafi‘i Yamani Makki Alaihir Rahmah writes in Mir’atul Jinaan:
Translation: “The twenty-seventh of the honoured month of Rajab and its night was the Night of Mi‘raaj according to the most wellknown view.”
Meaning: The Night of Mi‘raaj is the night of the 27th of Rajab, and this is the most famous opinion. (Mir’atul Jiinan, Volume 3, Page 344, Darul Kutbul Ilmiyyah Beirut) (2) Allamah Zarqaani Alaihir Rahmah writes in Sharhuz-Zarqaani Alal Mawaahibil Ladunniyah:
Translation: “It has been said that it was on the night of the twentyseventh of Rajab, and this is what people practice. Some scholars have said that this is the strongest view, because when there is disagreement among the early scholars and no decisive evidence exists to prefer one view over another, and practice becomes established upon one of the opinions and it is accepted by the people, then it is most likely that this opinion is the preferable one.” (Sharhuz-Zarqaani Alal Mawaahibil Ladunniyah Bil-Minahil Muhammadiyyah, Volume 2, Page 71, Darul Kutbul Ilmiyyah, Beirut)
(3) Allamah Mulla Ali Qaari Hanafi Alaihir Rahmah writes in Sharhush-Shifa by Qaadhi Ayaaz:
Translation: “Sayyid Jamaaluddeen, the hadith scholar, has narrated in Rawdatul Ahbaab that the Night of Mi‘raaj occurred on the twentyseventh of Rajab, in accordance with the practice observed in the Haramain Shareefain.” Meaning: The people of Makkah and Madinah observe this night with acts of worship such as voluntary Salaah and supplications. (Sharhush-Shifa lil Qaadhi Ayaaz, Volume 1, Page 387, Darul Kutbul Ilmiyyah, Beirut) (4) Allamah Shaikh Abdul Haqq Muhaddith Dehlavi Alaihir Rahmah writes in Lam‘aatut Tanqeeh fi Sharhi Mishkaatil Masaabeeh:
“The well-known view is that the Night of Mi‘raaj is the twentyseventh of Rajab, and this is the practice of the people of Madinah in the month of Rajab.” (Lam‘aatut Tanqeeh fi Sharhi Mishkaatil Masaabeeh, Volume 9, Page 376, Darun-Nawaadir)
In addition to the scholars mentioned above, many others such as Imam Rafa‘ee, Imam Nawawi, and Allamah Abdul Ghani Maqdasi also held that the Night of Mi‘raaj occurred on the 27th of Rajab.
The Summary: The preferred and chosen view is that the Mi‘raaj took place on the night of Monday, the 27th of Rajab, and that it occurred while the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمwas awake, with both Body and Soul.
