Question

Is it true that if forty Muslims attend a person's Janaazah Salaah, that person is forgiven?

Answer

Yes, it is narrated in Saheeh Muslim that Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas RadiAllahu Anhuma said:

Translation: "I heard the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلمsay: There is no Muslim who dies and whose Janaazah Salaah is attended by forty men who do not associate anything with Allah Almighty, except that Allah Almighty accepts their intercession on behalf of the deceased." (Saheeh Muslim Shareef) It has been said that the wisdom in specifying the number forty is that whenever forty individuals assemble, there is bound to be at least one among them who is a Wali (friend) of Allah. (MirqaatulMafaateeh / Chapter of Janaazah Salaah)
