Travelling After Dawn
Question
In the month of Ramadan, if a traveller begins a journey after dawn (Tuloo e Fajr), is it necessary for him to fast on that day?
Question Posed By: Muhammad Zulfiqar Chatsworth, Durban, South Africa
Answer
If a person starts his journey after dawn (Tuloo e Fajr), then it is obligatory upon him to fast that day, otherwise he will be a sinner. It is stated in Durr e Mukhtaar, a very famous book of Hanafi jurisprudence:
Translation: It is compulsory for a resident to complete the Ramadaan fast of the day if he started his journey today (i.e, if he started his journey after dawn - Tuloo e Fajr), then it is not permissible for him to break his fast. (Durr e Mukhtar with Raddul Muhtaar, Chapter As-Saum vol.1, Page 154 ) Huzoor Ala-Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (may Allah have mercy on him) writes in Fatawa Razviyyah Shareef while answering a question: "It is permissible for the person who started his travelling (journey) before Subh e Saadiq (Fajr i.e. True Dawn) to refrain from fasting on the day of travel and then make up the missed fasts." Subh e Saadiq will become an inclusion of the journey only if the journey has started before Subh e Saadiq, that is, at predawn or earlier. (Fataawa
Razviyyah Shareef, Volume 10, Page number 347, Fataawa Europe wa Bartaaniah, Page 257)
The Summary: If a traveller starts his journey before dawn, that is, at the time of Sehri, then it is not necessary for him to fast that day, and if he starts his journey after dawn, then it is obligatory on him to fast that day.

Fatawa SA is an independent, read-only index of fatawa already published by Amjadi Darul Ifta. It is not a fatwa service. For your own situation, ask the issuing Darul Ifta directly.
