A Forged Narration On Expiation
Question
What do the learned Muftis say concerning a message which is being widely shared on social media these days, that on the night of the last Friday of Ramadaan, by performing four Raka'at Nafil prayers in a specific way, one can clear and discharge 1000 months of Qadha prayers. It also mentions that the Qadha prayers of oneself and one's parents are also discharged through this Nafil. In other words, it is said to be the expiation for all the Qadha prayers that one is liable for throughout his life. What is the reality of this, according to Shari’ah?

Answer
The message in the question is completely false and incorrect. It is mentioned in a fabricated tradition which has been rejected by our expert scholars and authorities on Hadith. Therefore, in response to a similar question, Huzoor Ala-Hazrat Alaihir Rahma writes in Fataawa Razviyyah Shareef: This method which is said to be the means of making up for all one's Qadha e Umri i.e. life's missed prayers, as an expiation for these missed prayers is the worst innovation. The narration which is attributed to it is fabricated (Maudu). This practice is strictly forbidden, and to hold such intentions and beliefs are false and rejected. All the Muslims agree that this practice is blatant ignorance and clear deviance i.e. misleading. Our beloved Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمsays: “Whoever forgets the prayer, let him perform it when he remembers, and his expiation is nothing but the performance of it.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
Now look at that fabricated Hadith regarding which, the great scholar of Hadith and Fiqh Hazrat Mulla Ali Qari Hanafi Alaihir Rahma writes in his book Al Maudu’aat Al Kabeer:
Hazrat Mulla Ali Qari Hanafi Alaihir Rahma says: The Hadith “Whoever performs an obligatory prayer on the last Friday of Ramadaan makes up for his missed prayers of seventy years” is definitely false, because it contradicts the consensus that nothing else can replace the missed acts of worship of previous years (except that act of worship). (Fataawa Razviyyah Shareef Jadeed, Volume 8, Page No. 153) A similar question was also asked to Huzoor Sayyidi Taajush Shariah Alaihir Rahma. I will present here the question and the answer of the great Imam as a further proof to the fabrication of this narration. It was asked: There is a message being circulated via mobile SMS and email, and (those sending it) claim that it is a Hadith Shareef. It is said (in this message) that if a person had Qaza Namaaz and he is not aware of how many they are, he should perform 4 Raka’ats of Nafil with one Salaam on the last Friday of Ramadaan, and in every Raka’at after Surah Faateha, he should recite 7 times Ayat ul Kursi and 15 times Surah Kauthar. (It is claimed that) even if he has Qaza (Namaaz) equal to 700 years, this Namaaz will suffice as Kaffarah i.e. expiation for all of them. Is this proven from authentic Hadith Shareef?
Huzoor Sayyidi Taajush Shariah Alaihir Rahmah decreed; Allah Forbid! This is not the matter i.e. substance of any Hadith. Neither have I seen any such a Hadith, and nor can I believe that such a matter has been mentioned in the Hadith. This is to completely dismiss the obligatory command of Almighty Allah. If there is any such narration, then it is indeed forged. To send such an SMS, to receive it and (then) to act according to it, and to forward it, are all Haraam and contemptible actions.
In summary, that which has been mentioned in the question concerning the performance of four Raka'ats of supererogatory prayers in a specific way, to fulfill all the Qadha prayers of one's lifetime is simply fabricated and untrue. Remember! According to the Hadith which I have quoted from Bukhari Shareef, it is necessary to perform all the missed prayers (Namaaz) individually. There is no other way to fulfill the Qadha Prayers.
