Question

What does Shariah say about pointing the feet towards the Qibla?

Question posed by: Abdul Aziz, Durban, South Africa

Answer

Spreading one's feet towards the Qiblah intentionally without a valid excuse is Makrooh e Tanzeehi, therefore it is better to avoid it. If it is done with an excuse, or by mistake, then it is not regarded as being Makrooh. This is just as it has been mentioned in Fataawa Shaami:

Translation: Intentionally stretching one's feet towards the Qiblah while sleeping or in any other state is Makrooh because it is disrespectful (i.e. it is from bad manners) His statement: "because it is disrespectful" proves that the Makrooh being referred to here, is Makrooh e Tanzeehi. (Fataawa Shaami/Volume 2 page 673/ Chapter of Salaah/ Zia-ul-Quran Publications Lahore)

Sayyiduna Huzoor Ala Hazrat Radi Allahu Anhu writes in Fataawa Razaviyyah Shareef: "Sleeping whilst facing one's feet towards the Holy Kaaba, or spreading one's feet towards it, whilst sleeping, whilst awake, when lying down, or when sitting, are all disallowed, and this is regarded as being disrespectful in every form." (Fataawa Razaviyyah Shareef/ Volume 23 page 385/Raza Foundation Lahore)

Ask Amjadi

Fatawa SA is an independent, read-only index of fatawa already published by Amjadi Darul Ifta. It is not a fatwa service. For your own situation, ask the issuing Darul Ifta directly.
