Question

I am working on merchant ships and we are in continuous journey (safar). We offer salat qasar alhamdolillah. Please advise if we can offer salat qasar jama (zuhar asar together and maghrib Isha together in awwal waqt) in what conditions. Please keep note that although we are in safar but our life is very comfortable here onboard ship and we have enough time to offer qasar salat on their correct times. Please answer the way of taqwa, if we should offer qasar jama or offer the five qasar salat on time?

Answer

According to the Hanafi School of Fiqh (jurisprudence), it is not permissible to make Jama between two Salaahs except for during the days of Hajj where one is permitted to make Jama between Zohr and Asr in Arafah, and between Magrib and Esha in Muzdalifah.

Therefore, you will have to perform all your Salaahs in their respective times. However, it is permissible for you to make Jama in a way that you delay Zohr and perform it in the end time (just before the time of Zohr expires) and thereafter wait for the time of Asr to set in, as soon as it sets in, you perform Asr. (e.g. if the Zuhr Salaah time expires at 3.45 pm, and thereafter the Asr time commences, then one will perform Zuhr at approximately 3.30 pm, and will conclude it before 3.45 pm. Shortly after offering the Zuhr Salaah he will proceed with Asr Salaah).
