Question

Is it permissible to keep a khatme quraan for a deceased in the masjid after a certain namaz?

Answer

To do any good action and pass on the reward to the deceased is permissible if no specific time, day, week or month is stipulated for it, rather there will also be tremendous benefit for the deceased.

Stipulating a time and gathering people for this purpose is disliked by the honourable Fuqahaa, therefore people should not be gathered in a house, Masjid or any other place for this purpose as this then becomes a custom and devoid of Ikhlaas.

Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi Rahimahullah has mentioned a method of reciting Qur’aan for the deceased which is easy as well as safe from any doubts. He says: “The current form of reciting Qur’aan and passing on the reward to the deceased is not correct. Rather, the close associates of the deceased should be requested to recite for and pass the reward onto the deceased as they get Tawfiq. This form of gathering people is not appropriate. Reciting Surah Ikhlaas three times will accrue the reward of reciting the entire Qur’aan. This is even better than making ten Khatms in a collective manner which in most cases is just to show-off to the relatives of the deceased, whereas in the sight of Allah Ta’aala quantity is not what matters, rather, Ikhlaas is the focal point. This is the reason why Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam mentioned; if a Sahabi Radiallahu Anhu gives one Mudd (a trivial amount) of dates in charity and another person gives dates equivalent to mount Uhud in charity he cannot reach the stage of the Sahabi Radiallahu Anhu. The reason for this difference is only due to Ikhlaas. After all nobody can imagine to have

Ikhlaas like the Sahabah Radiallahu Anhum.”
