Zakaat On Products A Beautician Uses
Question
Is there zakat on beauty products in stock by a beautician such as eye liners, powders, creams etc?
Answer
There will be two possible scenarios in the case inquired:
A. The effect of the product remains after the treatment. Zakaat will have to be paid on all such products. This will include eye-liners, eye-shadows, dyes, bleaches etc.
B. The effect of the product does not remain in any way. Zakaat will not have to be paid on such products. Products like soap etc. will fall under this category.
N.B. Products such as creams and shampoos can fall in either category. To help you decide in which category it falls, if the usage of a certain cream or shampoo will increase the fee charged for doing the same work of a standard treatment, Zakaat will have to be paid on that product as well. This will also then necessitate that a difference be made between general soaps and beauty soaps. If using a beauty soap instead of a regular soap will cause the fee to increase then Zakaat will have to be paid on the beauty soap as well. In other words, any product that will cause the fee to be increased, Zakaat will have to be paid on that product.
